Bill Haley has what he thinks is the most unique way to see Waikiki - a two wheel, self-propelled “personal transport” device, called a Segway Human Transporter.
“I was curious when Segways first came out,” Haley said from his Waikiki headquarters, next door to Planet Hollywood, on Kalakaua Ave.“A friend of mine introduced me to it.”
The ride changed his life. Now owner of Segway Experience of Honolulu, Haley has designed an informal tour of Hawaii’s most popular destination, Waikiki.”W e designed the tour with newcomers in mind,” Haley said.“The tour is very informative, part entertainment, part history, part geography, even part restaurant review. Visitors have a great time, get introduced to Waikiki and enjoy riding a Segway.”
“Safety is number one with us,” Haley continued.“ W e show visitors a very short video. Then spend as long as it takes for the visitor to get comfortable with the Segway.People as old as 85 ride the Segway, and they do wonderfully.”
The Historic Waikiki tours are approximately one hour and are limited to a maximum of five riders, plus a guide.
As they glide along, the tour leader talks about Waikiki’s past, prominent citizens or famous people who have visited and Hawaiian legends.

Daily tours at 9:30am, 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm are just $45.Y ou can also rent the Segway for $35 an hour which includes full instruction.
“People walking by want to try a Segway,” Haley said. “They’ve seen it on TV and are curious.Once they’ve tried it, they want to take off on their own.”

Haley said once the visitors have completed the instructions, the visitors receive a “Segway driver’s license” recognized by any Segway dealer in the US.“They love having a license.” Be sure to bring your camera, the people at home are not going to believe you glided through Waikiki without the photo.

How a Segway works The Segway Human Transporter works like a human body using dynamic stabilization: a gyroscope, tilt sensors, high-speed microprocessors, and powerful electric motors which work like our inner ear, eyes, muscles, and brain to maintain balance.
It instantaneously assesses information and makes minute adjustments one hundred times a second.Segway HT balances traveling at 10 mph, slowly maneuvering in tight spaces, or standing still.
The Segway intuitively balances the way we do.There is no accelerator and no brakes.Lean forward and you move forward.Straighten up and you stop.Lean back, and you move back.T o turn, rotate the steering grip in either direction.
