IAO VALLEY

Discover Maui's natural magic at Hawai‘i Nature Center in wonderful Iao Valley

One of the great natural wonders of Maui, Iao Valley blends tales of ancient Hawaiian warfare with a lush and peaceful tropical setting. Iao means, "facing the down" or "supreme cloud."

The valley faces due East; it embraces the warmth of the rising sun and cradles the failing light at dusk.

Approximately 750 feet above sea level, Iao Valley is 10 miles in length and comprises approximately 4,000 acres. The head of the valley is a broad circular amphitheater substantially wider at the back than at the front. Four major streams converge here to form Iao Stream, which normally discharges about 54 million gallons of water a day.

The Iao Needle, Kuka emoku, means "standing on the boundary" and was thought to be a lookout for warriors. It rises 1,200 feet above the valley floor. It is really the end of a long sharp ridge, a resistant chunk of caldera fill strengthened by a large number of basalt dikes. Basalt is an iron-rich volcanic rock.

According to legend, Hina and Maui had a daughter named Iao. No one dared approach her except for Puuokamoa, a half fish, half man-god with whom she fell in love. Upon discovery by Maui, Puuokamoa was captured and ordered burned to death. But Pele, who was a friend of Puuokamoa, persuaded Maui to turn him into a pillar of stone instead, as a reminder of those who dare to defy sacred law.

The free Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens at the mouth of the valley showcases Hawaii's many peoples with cultural pavilions. There are picnic areas and easy access to Iao Stream. Visit the Interactive Nature Museum at the Hawaii Nature Center and Gift Shop, open 10 am to 4 pm daily. Call 244-6500 to find out about frequent nature walks and other special events.

At the end of the road is Iao Valley State Park, open 7 am to 7 pm daily, free to the public. Hike along railed stairs to view the Iao Needle or explore on your own further up the valley.
